# Free painting invoice template

A painting invoice sells the part of the job a customer cannot see afterward: the prep. Patching, sanding and priming take real hours, so they belong on their own lines, next to the paint and the coats. The template below has those lines ready for a typical interior repaint.

Replace the example with your own rooms and rates, then save the PDF from this page. No account, and nothing is uploaded. Doing larger renovations too? See the [general contractor invoice template](https://jiffy-invoice.com/invoice-template/construction).

## What to put on an invoice for painters

- The address and the rooms or surfaces painted: walls, ceilings, trim, doors, exterior siding
- Prep work shown as its own labor or line: patching, sanding, caulking, priming
- The number of coats and the paint brand and finish, so the quality is on paper
- Measurements or a unit price, such as per square foot, per room or per door
- Materials: paint by the gallon, primer, tape, drop cloths and supplies
- Extra work agreed during the job, as separate lines
- The deposit received, the balance due and your touch-up policy

## How painters bill

Interior jobs are commonly priced per room or per square foot of wall, with ceilings, trim and doors added as separate items. Exterior jobs are priced per square foot of surface, per side of the house, or as a whole-house bid. Labor-only rates are used by some painters who let the client buy the paint, in which case you leave the paint lines off.

A good painter bills prep honestly. Heavy patching, wallpaper removal, stain blocking and lead-safe practices on older houses are extras, so list them as their own lines instead of burying them in the room price. Deposits of 25 to 50 percent are common to cover materials, with the balance due at the final walk-through. Send a signed [estimate](https://jiffy-invoice.com/estimate-app) first so the scope matches the bill.

## Tips to get paid faster

1. Do a walk-through at the end and hand over the invoice right after the customer says they are happy.
2. Write the color names and finishes on the invoice. It is a record for touch-ups and stops later disputes about the shade.
3. Price big prep items separately, such as water stains and wallpaper removal. Customers can see why it costs more.
4. Photograph the finished rooms, and attach or mention them in the invoice email.
5. Pay link, bank transfer or card, make it easy. See [online payments](https://jiffy-invoice.com/features/online-payments) to put a payment link on the invoice.

## Common invoice mistakes

- Quoting a per-room price and then painting rooms with high ceilings or heavy repairs at the same rate
- Not writing down the paint brand and finish, so the customer later claims a cheaper paint was used
- Forgetting to account for a deposit on the final bill

## Questions

### What should a painting invoice include?

Your business details, the customer and job address, the surfaces painted, prep work, number of coats, paint brand and color, labor and materials, extras, deposit received, total and payment terms.

### Should I charge per square foot or per room?

Both are common. Per room is easier to explain to homeowners. Per square foot is more accurate on large or unusual spaces. Show the unit you quoted.

### How do I bill prep work?

As its own labor line with hours and rate, or as a priced item such as "patch and sand walls". Prep is a real cost, and showing it helps customers accept it.

### Is this painting invoice template free?

Yes. Fill it in on this page and download the PDF. No account is needed.
