How it works
How to work out VAT or sales tax
- To add tax: multiply the amount without tax by the rate and add that to the amount. 100 at 20% is 100 + 20 = 120.
- To take tax out of a total: divide the total by 1 plus the rate. 120 at 20% is 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100, so the tax is 20.
- Round to two decimals, and round on the invoice total, not on each line, unless your rules say otherwise.
FAQ
Questions about tax on an invoice
Is VAT the same as sales tax?
They do the same job but work differently. VAT is charged at every step and the business gets back what it paid. VAT 20% is charged once, on the final sale. The arithmetic of this calculator is the same for both.
Which rate should I use?
The rate that applies to your goods or services in your country. This tool does not know it, so check with your tax authority or accountant.
Why does a rounded total sometimes differ by a cent?
Rounding each line first and rounding the total last can give a one-cent difference. Pick one way and use it on every invoice.
