Free carpentry invoice template
Carpentry mixes skilled labor with materials that vary hugely in price, from framing lumber to a slab of walnut. The invoice has to show both clearly, and for custom work it also has to account for design and a deposit. The template below is set up for a built-in bookcase and can be reshaped for decks, trim or cabinets.
Edit the example, add your client and prices, then save the PDF from this page. No account, nothing sent to a server. For big projects with several trades, see the general contractor template.

What goes on it
What to put on an invoice for carpenters
- A description of the piece or the project and the address it is built or installed at
- Design, measuring and drawing time, billed separately if you charge for it
- Labor split into shop time and on-site install time when the rates differ
- Materials by type: lumber species, plywood, panels, hardware, fasteners
- Finishing work such as stain, paint or oil, with the number of coats
- Delivery, installation and removal of old work, each on its own line
- The deposit paid, the balance due and a note on the natural variation of wood
How you bill
How carpenters bill
Custom work, like built-ins, cabinets and furniture, is mostly priced as a fixed fee based on an estimated mix of materials and hours. Framing, decks and trim carpentry are often priced per linear foot or square foot, or by the hour for repairs. Whichever way you quote, the invoice should show the pieces so the client can see where the money went.
Because wood and hardware are bought before the work starts, a deposit of 30 to 50 percent when the order is placed is standard. The balance is due on delivery or completion. For work in stages, such as rough framing then finish carpentry, bill each stage after it is done. A signed estimate before you start protects both sides when the design changes.
Get paid faster
Tips to get paid faster
- Take a deposit that covers the materials. Hardwood and special-order hardware are expensive to hold in stock if a client backs out.
- Attach a drawing or photos of the finished piece to the invoice email. It confirms what was built and reminds the client why they hired you.
- Bill design time. A good drawing is work, and a client who pays for it takes the project seriously.
- Note changes made after the quote as their own lines. "Added two drawers" is a clear and fair add-on.
- Invoice on delivery day, while the client is looking at the finished work. A payment reminder takes care of the follow-up.
Watch out
Common invoice mistakes
- Pricing materials at what you paid for the last project when lumber costs have moved
- Absorbing finish work and delivery into the labor line so the real cost vanishes
- Letting design changes slip in without a written change or an extra line

FAQ
Questions
What should a carpentry invoice include?
Your details, the client and site address, a description of the work, labor with hours and rate, itemized materials and hardware, finishing, delivery, deposit received, total and payment terms.
How do I price custom carpentry?
Estimate materials and hours, add your overhead and profit, and quote a fixed price. Break it into lines on the invoice so the client sees the build behind the number.
Should I bill labor and materials separately?
Yes. It makes the invoice transparent and helps you adjust when material prices change from one job to the next.
Is this carpentry invoice template free?
Yes, with no account. Fill it in here and download the PDF.
