How you bill
How fence installers bill
The base price is per linear foot, installed. It depends on the material, the height and the difficulty of the ground, and it always includes posts, rails and the labor to set them. Gates are billed as separate items, because a single gate can cost as much as ten feet of fence. Removal of an old fence is its own line, per foot or as a flat price.
Most fence jobs are paid in two parts. A deposit, commonly half, covers the materials order, and the balance is due when the job is done. Keep the deposit visible on the invoice so the customer sees the remaining amount. A reminder is easy to send when a customer lets the final payment slide.

Tips to get paid faster
- Walk the line with the customer before you order materials. Confirm where the property line is, and put it in writing that they are responsible for it.
- Price rocky ground and slopes by the hole. It protects you from digging through bedrock on a flat footage price.
- List each gate with its width and hardware. Customers often change their minds about a gate later.
- Pass the permit fee through at cost, on its own line. It is not a markup and customers accept it.
- Take photos of the finished run and the gate latch. They help with warranty questions and make good proof for your next customer.
Watch out
Common invoice mistakes
- Quoting a flat footage price without checking the terrain, then eating the extra concrete
- Not writing who owns the property line decision
- Hiding the old fence removal inside the install price
